Electric Vehicle Incentives in B.C.

Oct 19, 2021

The CleanBC Go Electric light-duty vehicle rebate program is intended to make zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) more affordable for British Columbians.

The program provides point-of-purchase rebates on eligible passenger vehicles of up to:

  • $3,000 for the purchase or lease of a new battery electric vehicle, hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, or longer-range plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.
  • $1,500 for the purchase or lease of a shorter-range plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.

Vehicle rebates are available to B.C. residents, businesses, non-profit organizations and local government organizations.

To ensure the funds available for rebates go further and are available for more British Columbians purchasing lower-cost ZEVs, the Provincial Government has established a vehicle price cap. Any ZEV with a manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) above $55,000 is not eligible for a vehicle rebate.

Rebates will be available until Program funding is depleted. The Go Electric Rebate program is administered through the New Car Dealers Association of BC. Visit the Go Electric website for program details.

The BC Ministry of Energy and Mines has established incentive amounts based on vehicle type and battery capacity. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs or EVs), fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) with an electric range of 85 km or greater are eligible for the full incentive amount up to $3,000, while plug-in hybrids with an electric range of less than 85 km are eligible for incentives up to $1,500.

As of June 22, 2019, vehicles with an MSRP of more than $55,000 are not eligible for the incentive.

Federal vehicle rebates

Get up to $5,000 off the purchase price of a new EV

There are additional incentives for purchasing an electric vehicle in Canada. Qualifying vehicles (battery electric and longer range plug-in hybrids) are also eligible for rebates from the federal government, ranging from $2,500 for most PHEVs up to $5,000 for EVs and a few select PHEVs. Vehicles need to have a base model MSRP of $45,000 or less, with higher values qualifying when the vehicle has more than seven seats.

Federal incentives are in addition to provincial rebates and are also applied at the point of sale.
